Kris Knight

Kris Knight (b. 1980, Windsor, Canada; lives and works in Toronto) is a Canadian painter known for romantic, psychologically charged portraits exploring intimacy, masculinity and queer identity. Working primarily in oil, he depicts androgynous figures suspended between vulnerability and reserve, drawing on personal memories, found imagery, floriography and art-historical references.

Influenced by Romanticism, Symbolism and 18th-century French portraiture, Knight uses soft, luminous palettes and delicate layers of paint to create an atmosphere of ambiguity and melancholy. Flowers, foliage and decorative motifs often act as emotional and symbolic cues within his compositions.

Knight has also collaborated with Gucci, contributing imagery and patterns to the house’s collections in 2014–15. His work is held in public and private collections including the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, 21c Museum, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Oppenheimer Collection, the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection and Gucci.
