Syed Hussain

Syed Hussain (b. 1987, Quetta; lives and works in Lahore) is a Pakistani painter and mixed-media artist who reinterprets the Indo-Persian miniature tradition through themes of memory, identity and displacement. A graduate of the National College of Arts, Lahore, where he specialised in Miniature Painting, Hussain received the Haji Sharif Award for Miniature Painting in 2019.

Central to Hussain’s practice is the history and lived experience of Hazara communities in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Drawing on family photographs, oral histories and research, he creates intricately detailed compositions in which figures, domestic objects and fragments of landscape come together like pages from a personal or collective archive. Through these images, he explores migration, cultural memory and the preservation of histories that are often overlooked.

While grounded in the precise techniques of miniature painting, Hussain expands the tradition through mixed media, incorporating layered papers, rubbed pigments, stitching and collage. These material interventions evoke ideas of fracture, repair and cultural transmission, while his restrained palette and meticulous attention to detail give the works an intimate, contemplative quality.

Hussain has exhibited across Pakistan and internationally, including at Twelve Gates Arts in Philadelphia and NYU Abu Dhabi. In 2024, he was selected for the Art Omi residency in New York. Through his practice, Hussain brings the language of miniature painting into the present, using it as a means of documenting individual and collective memory while reflecting on belonging, migration and displacement.
