artist presentation

Shishi San is a multidisciplinary textile artist whose practice centers on tufting, a technique she approaches with both precision and play. Working with vivid colour palettes and soft textures, she creates tactile compositions that bridge drawing, sculpture, and design.

Exploring the structural and expressive possibilities of textile, San crafts one-of-a-kind pieces that balance symmetry with spontaneity, often combining organic forms with intricate patterns. Her work reflects an ongoing investigation into materiality, movement, and rhythm—pushing the boundaries of what tufted textiles can be.

San’s visual language is shaped by her personal history and cultural background. Born in Vietnam and raised in Belgium, she draws inspiration from South and East Asian folklore, symbolism, and craft traditions. These references lend her work an intimate, narrative quality that resonates across cultures.

Since 2022, she has expanded her practice into sculptural forms, developing a distinct series of three-dimensional tufted vases that playfully blur the line between object and ornament. Her evolving body of work demonstrates a deep curiosity for form, texture, and the emotional resonance of handmade processes.
